Tuxedo vs. Suit

This Michael Kors Wedding Suit will make any groom look and feel great on his wedding day!  But, what is the difference between a suit and a tuxedo?

Tuxedos have traditionally been considered formal and suits are the casual alternative.   The image that often comes to mind when referring to a tuxedo is the black bow tie, James Bond look and a starched white shirt.   However, modern tuxedos now include an array of colors for jackets and pants including shades of blue, brown and gray. Ties can be in almost any color or pattern and comfortable fabrics are the norm.

The difference between a tuxedo and a suit is actually so minimal that it’s often difficult to tell the two apart. So how do you tell the difference between a tuxedo and a suit?

We’ve made it easy for you to identify the details that distinguish one from the other below:

  1. Satin trim – Every tuxedo has a satin detail. This may be as slight as a thin side stripe on the pant leg, a satin button, and/or a satin trimmed lapel.  Suits are in a single fabric and will often have bone, metal or plastic buttons covered in the same material as the jacket and pants.
  2. Shirts – The color of a tuxedo shirt can now be either white or ivory.  The shirt may have  a wing or turndown collar.  Suits on the other hand, are often worn with a more casual pointed collar or button down dress shirt in a solid color or a print.
  3. Shoes – Traditional black patent shoes are still the most popular choice with tuxedos.  But, black patent shoes are not worn with suits. Instead, suit wearers usually opt for a more casual oxford, brown or black loafer, or a slip-on type shoe.
  4. Accessories – Today, tuxedos usually include cufflinks, a vest or cummerbund, and a bow or windsor tie.  Suspenders are a popular accessory too.  The main difference when wearing a suit is that bow ties are not recommended and vests are optional.
  5. Events – Tuxedos are most welcome at all formal events including evening weddings and black tie celebrations. A suit can be worn anywhere and at any time.
